20 Questions and Answers

Q: Why do disks in a 5.25” 80T HD drive hold less than a 3.5” 80T HD drive?
A: Both write data at 250 kHz but the 5.25” drive spins at 360 RPM whereas the 3.5” drive spins at
300 RPM which results in less data written in 1 disk revolution.

Answer should read:

Could I suggest a more precise description, where appropriate, of the components in the BOM for those sourcing their own components.
For example, how fine do trimpots RV1-4 need to be, 12 or 25 turn, rated 250mW or 500mW; acceptable range and requirements re physical size and lead spacing of CV1.

Sure, when I used to do this for a living I'd include in the BOM reference part numbers to Farnell (Now Element14), or other suppliers then the procurement department could order that actual part or use it as a guide. As I don't have an Element14 trade account most parts were sourced from eBay. Problem with eBay is that it changes all the time so not much point in including the eBay supplier in the BOM. I could have included Element14 part numbers but at the time these were being supplied built-up and I was trying to get the manual out.

The trimpots could be 1:1 or multiturn. It's not critical but multi-turn is easier. Power dissipation is not an issue.

This isn't the topic to discuss it but it may be that a kit of parts including the PCB may be made available so you may want to hold-off on ordering parts.
